Heavy Rain, Strong Winds to Lash Parts of Kenya Through Monday — Met Department Warns

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya is set for another spell of turbulent weather, with the national meteorological agency warning of sustained heavy rainfall and strong winds across multiple regions from Friday, June 6, through Monday, June 9.

In an advisory, the Kenya Meteorological Department said the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, and the Coast are among the areas likely to be hit by the intensified rains.

But it’s not just rain that Kenyans need to brace for.

The department has also flagged dangerously strong winds — especially in coastal counties and the South-eastern lowlands — which could disrupt marine activity and pose safety risks to small boats and outdoor gatherings.

“Strong southerly to south-eastern winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots (46 km/h) are expected over the Coast and Kenya’s territorial waters, the South-eastern lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya,” the statement read.

The warning comes as parts of the country continue to experience unpredictable weather patterns, with alternating sunny spells and sudden downpours disrupting travel, farming, and fishing.

Communities living in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been urged to take extra precautions. Coastal residents and boat operators are advised to be on high alert for rough seas through the weekend.

“The public is encouraged to stay updated through our daily forecasts and to follow safety guidance issued by local authorities,” said the department.

This latest alert adds to a string of weather advisories in recent weeks, as climate variability continues to drive unseasonal and extreme conditions across the country.
