NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has released new guidelines for motor vehicle owners seeking to update duty payment records, a move aimed at streamlining compliance and enhancing data accuracy in Kenya’s transport system.
In a public notice issued Tuesday, the Authority outlined the list of required documents for duty record updates, urging vehicle owners to follow the new procedures to avoid delays.
Motorists will now be required to submit the following:
- A duty update request letter
- A copy of the vehicle owner’s national ID
- The original logbook
- Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) entry documentation
- The duty payment receipt
- Contact details including phone number and email
“Kindly ensure the contact information, that is, the phone number and the email address of the motor vehicle, is provided,” NTSA emphasized in the notice.
To confirm document submission, NTSA said it will stamp a copy of the request letter as proof that the materials have been received and reviewed.
Additional Guidelines for Public Transport Operators
NTSA added that a comprehensive public notice with extended instructions—particularly for Public Transport Operators—is now available for download on its website (www.ntsa.go.ke). The document includes:
- Locations for submitting documentation
- Applicable processing fees
- Steps to retrieve processed documents
- Procedures for applying for duplicate certificates of ownership
Enhancing Safety and Compliance
The duty update module, NTSA said, is a critical component of the transport data management system and is designed to support stakeholders such as financial institutions, insurance firms, vehicle dealers, and government agencies.
Established under the NTSA Act No. 33 of 2012, the Authority is tasked with overseeing road transport regulation, improving safety standards, reducing accidents, and harmonizing the operations of various transport departments.
“We are committed to making Kenyan roads safe for all users through effective regulation, enforcement, and public education,” the Authority said on its website.
NTSA further reiterated its mandate to implement road transport policies, inspect and certify vehicles, license public service vehicles (PSVs), and advise the government on safety and mobility matters.
