NAIROBI, Kenya— KCB Bank has partnered with UnionPay International (UPI) to enhance digital payment services.
The move is anchored on allowing customers to use UnionPay cards for online transactions through Cybersource and Mastercard Payment Gateway Services (MPGS).
According to the partners,the integration marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s digital transformation journey, aimed at improving e-commerce experiences for both consumers and merchants across the country.
“We are delighted to join hands with UnionPay International to enhance our e-commerce payment solutions,” said Jane Isiaho, Director of Retail Banking at KCB Bank Kenya.
“This partnership reinforces our commitment to providing secure and efficient digital payment services that cater to the evolving needs of our customers.”
Through the collaboration, KCB Bank will enable UnionPay card acceptance across key merchant sectors, including supermarket chains, government e-Citizen services, and leading hotel brands.
The initiative also leverages advanced payment technologies such as 3D Secure (3DS), ensuring safer and seamless online transactions.
The partners contend that UnionPay’s entry into the Kenyan e-commerce space brings valuable expertise from China’s mature digital payments market.
“By integrating Expresspay and 3DS products, we aim to provide enhanced security and convenience for online transactions, contributing to a more seamless shopping experience,”said Asad Burney, Head of UnionPay International Africa Region.
The partnership comes on the back of sustained growth in at Kenya’s e-commerce sector is experiencing rapid growth.
The Competition Authority of Kenya projects that e-commerce penetration will reach 53.6 percent by 2025, fueled by increased internet connectivity, improved logistics, and widespread fintech adoption.
