Ex-Gang Boss Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis Sentenced To 40 Years For Tupac Shakur Murder

Date:

LAS VEGAS, US – Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to at least 40 years in prison for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rap superstar Tupac Shakur, bringing a major development in one of America’s most prominent unsolved cases.

Davis, 63, was found guilty in September of one count of murder with a deadly weapon over the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. He has said he intends to appeal the verdict.

Prosecutors argued that Davis organised the killing despite not firing the fatal shots himself. They said he supplied the gun used by his nephew, Orlando Anderson, who allegedly opened fire from a white Cadillac.

Davis had acknowledged his role in the events in a memoir and in media interviews, but his defence team argued during the trial that his statements were fabricated or exaggerated to generate publicity and sell books.

The conviction marked a significant breakthrough in a case that had remained unresolved for nearly three decades and fuelled years of speculation among hip-hop fans.

Tupac’s Family Calls For Maximum Sentence

During Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo accused Davis of spending years publicly boasting about his role in Shakur’s death, which he said had far-reaching consequences.

Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, told the court that the loss had devastated their family.

“The loss of Tupac, for a long time, crippled my family,” she said.

She described her brother as a man with significant promise who wanted to make the world better and help his local community. She urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence.

Shakur’s brother, Maurice Shakur, also addressed the court, asking for the longest possible prison term.

When Judge Carli Kierny asked Davis whether he had anything to say before sentencing, he replied: “I’m good. I’m gonna appeal this case for sure.”

Kierny told Davis that he could not take a person’s life and simply walk away from the consequences, particularly when the victim was someone whose death had affected people around the world.

Davis’ Own Statements Became Key Evidence

A central part of the prosecution’s case involved Davis’ own accounts of the killing.

Authorities said Davis repeatedly acknowledged being inside the white Cadillac from which the shots were fired.

In 2008, he gave police information about Shakur’s death during a confidential interview connected to the investigation into the killing of fellow rapper Christopher Wallace, known as The Notorious B.I.G., who was shot dead in 1997.

Davis had been protected from prosecution under an agreement connected to that interview. However, prosecutors argued that his later public disclosures, including statements in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, voided the protection.

A judge subsequently allowed the 2008 police interview to be used as evidence against him at trial.

The prosecution maintained that Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, ordered the shooting and supplied the firearm used by Anderson.

Anderson, who denied involvement in Shakur’s murder, died in an unrelated shooting in 1998.

Tupac’s Legacy Endures Nearly 30 Years After His Death

Shakur was 25 when he was shot in Las Vegas and remains one of hip-hop’s most influential figures. He sold more than 75 million records worldwide, according to figures cited in reports about his career.

His death became one of the most widely discussed cases in American music history, generating decades of speculation before Davis was charged and convicted.

Davis’ conviction and sentence mark a major legal milestone in the investigation. His planned appeal means the case could continue through the courts.
