NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary closure of the Nairobi Southern Bypass this weekend to allow for the 2025 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.
In a public notice dated October 17, KeNHA said the closure will take effect from midnight on Saturday, October 25, and run until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, covering the stretch between Ole Sereni Interchange and Kikuyu Town.
“The closure is to facilitate smooth coordination and ensure safety during the 2025 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon,” KeNHA stated.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes, including Mombasa Road (A8) through Uhuru Highway, which will remain open throughout the event.
Acting KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said the Authority is working closely with the National Police Service and marathon organisers to minimise disruption.
“We appeal to all road users to exercise patience and cooperate with our officers for a safe and successful event,” Kimeli said.
According to KeNHA’s traffic plan, several diversion routes have been identified to ease movement during the closure.
Motorists from Dagoretti South to Kikuyu are advised to use Dagoretti Road, which will remain open.
Those travelling between Lang’ata and Dagoretti South should use Lang’ata Road through Karen.
Drivers from Mombasa Road heading to Kikuyu will be diverted through Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way.
Alternative connecting routes around Karen and Lang’ata will also remain open, KeNHA added.
Kimeli noted that the temporary shutdown underscores Kenya’s commitment to hosting international sporting events while maintaining road safety standards.
“The Standard Chartered Marathon is an important annual event that promotes sports tourism and enhances Nairobi’s image as an athletics hub,” he said.
Now in its 22nd edition, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon—held every October—draws thousands of local and international athletes.
The 2025 race will feature multiple categories, including the 42km full marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km race, 5km Family Fun Run, wheelchair race, and the CEO & Corporate Challenge.
Organisers have promised improved logistics, additional hydration points, and enhanced safety measures to accommodate a record turnout expected this year.
