NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Airways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) to strengthen digital skills, applied research, and innovation across the region.
The agreement was signed by Kenya Airways Acting Managing Director and CEO, Capt. George Kamal and AICAD Executive Director Prof. James Njiru.
The airline’s Chief Information and Data Officer, Fred Kitunga, also attended the signing ceremony.
Kenya Airways said the partnership marks a strategic step toward building a future-ready digital workforce in line with the aviation sector’s growing reliance on technology-driven operations.
“Through this partnership, we are strengthening capabilities in Software Engineering, Data & Analytics, Cybersecurity, and emerging technologies, while creating opportunities for training, internships, mentorship, and real-world projects,” the airline said in a statement.
Focus on Digital Transformation
The collaboration targets critical technology domains that underpin modern airline operations, including data analytics for route optimisation, cybersecurity for passenger data protection, and software systems that support ticketing, cargo management, and customer experience.
Kenya Airways has in recent years accelerated its digital transformation agenda as part of broader restructuring efforts aimed at improving efficiency, competitiveness, and service delivery.
By partnering with AICAD, an intergovernmental institution focused on capacity building and research, the airline seeks to bridge industry and academia through applied research and practical skills development.
Training and Innovation Opportunities
The MoU provides for structured internships, mentorship programmes, and collaborative projects that expose students and young professionals to real-world aviation and technology challenges.
Industry-academic linkages are increasingly viewed as critical to closing skills gaps in emerging technologies, particularly in Africa, where demand for digital expertise continues to outpace supply.
AICAD’s mandate includes strengthening institutional capacity and promoting innovation across member states, making the partnership relevant beyond Kenya’s borders.

Regional Economic Context
The aviation sector plays a central role in regional trade, tourism, and economic integration under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Digital resilience and cybersecurity readiness have become strategic priorities as airlines modernise operations and expand e-commerce capabilities.
By investing in digital talent development, Kenya Airways signals a long-term strategy focused not only on operational recovery but also on innovation-led growth.
“Together, we are investing in talent, innovation, and a future-ready digital workforce for the region,” the airline said.
The agreement positions Kenya Airways as an active participant in shaping the region’s digital capacity ecosystem, aligning aviation growth with broader national and continental digital transformation goals.
