NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has unveiled plans to upgrade the busy Kiambu Road into a four-lane dual carriageway as part of a major infrastructure development project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between Nairobi and Kiambu County.
The project, officially titled the Capacity Enhancement of Pangani–Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi (B32) Road and Adjacent Road Network, is backed by financing from the China EXIM Bank.
KeNHA announced the commencement of the contractor prequalification process under Tender No. KeNHA/2889/2025, with applications invited from eligible Chinese contractors.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 am EAT.
“Upgrading of the entire project road to a four-lane dual carriageway, including pedestrian walkways, will ensure better service delivery,” KeNHA said in a statement.
Project Scope
The expansion will cover the Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi corridor, as well as several adjoining spurs, including Ridgeways Road, the Kiambu–Thika link, UN Avenue through Runda, and key junctions along the route.
KeNHA confirmed that construction will adhere to FIDIC Silver Book standards, which guide international best practices for design-build projects.
The works will include:
- Road widening to four lanes
- Six new pedestrian footbridges
- Development of interchanges and bridges
- Construction of walkways and non-motorised transport (NMT) facilities
- Bus bays, signage, traffic management systems, and road furniture
The full construction phase is projected to take 36 months, with a 24-month defects notification period thereafter.
China-Only Bidders
In line with the funding agreement, only Chinese firms or consortia led by Chinese contractors are eligible to bid.
Applicants must demonstrate financial capacity, technical competence, and adherence to conditions tied to Chinese government-supported financing.
Bidding documents are available on the KeNHA website (www.kenha.co.ke) and the Public Procurement Information Portal (tenders.go.ke). Clarifications and inquiries can be directed to procurement@kenha.co.ke.
Physical submissions should be addressed to the Director of Development, KeNHA, at Barabara Plaza, Airport South Road, Nairobi.
The Kiambu Road project is part of a broader government push to modernise the country’s transport network, reduce traffic pressure in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, and stimulate economic growth through infrastructure investment.
