MACHAKOS, Kenya — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has condemned bribery and corruption, describing the vices as “satanic” and urging public officers to be content with their salaries and wealth earned through honest means.
Speaking on Wednesday during the official opening of the Kithimani Land Registry and the issuance of title deeds in Yatta Constituency, Machakos County, Kindiki said corruption remains one of the greatest threats to Kenya’s development and called for collective efforts to eliminate the vice.
The Deputy President urged civil servants and other public officials to reject the temptation of accepting bribes, emphasizing that integrity and accountability are essential in public service.
“Bribery is satanic, and it is one of the things fueling corruption and destroying our country. If you are a government official, be content with your salary and the wealth you have earned through your own sweat,” Kindiki said.
He also appealed to religious leaders to continue praying for the country, saying the fight against corruption requires both institutional reforms and moral leadership.
“And you, pastor, continue praying for us so that corruption comes to an end. We will also help you build the church,” he added.
Kindiki made the remarks while commissioning the Kithimani Land Registry, saying the new facility will improve access to land services and support the government’s efforts to secure land ownership through the issuance of title deeds.
He reaffirmed the Kenya Kwanza administration’s commitment to improving public service delivery and accelerating land reforms aimed at giving more Kenyans secure ownership of their property.
Calls for Unity Ahead of 2027
The Deputy President’s remarks come days after he urged leaders and residents of the Mt Kenya region to remain united ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the 36th anniversary celebrations of the Embu ACK Diocese on Sunday, Kindiki dismissed attempts to use the outcome of the recent Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election to predict the next presidential race.
“We have a long history of unity as the people of Mt Kenya. There is nothing that can divide us. Those who think they can divide us will not succeed,” he said.
He maintained that the 2027 presidential election would be determined by the government’s development record rather than the outcome of individual by-elections.
“It was not a presidential election so there is no problem because the voters chose their MP. Elections for President will be done next year and we are ready for it,” he said.
Kindiki said the Kenya Kwanza administration would seek re-election based on completed development projects, including roads, hospitals, markets, electricity and water programmes, while calling on all leaders to safeguard national unity and peace.
