Kisumu: Health Officials on High Alert After Cholera Outbreak

Date:

KISUMU, Kenya— Health officials in Kisumu County are on high alert following an outbreak of acute watery diarrhea, with several cases confirmed as cholera.

The County Department of Public Health and Sanitation announced that the first cases were reported on March 19, 2025, at Ahero County Hospital in Nyando Sub-County.

So far, 15 cases of acute watery diarrhea have been recorded, with six testing positive for Vibrio cholerae through rapid diagnostic tests, and one case confirmed via culture.

Laboratory investigations conducted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) identified multiple pathogens, including Aeromonas spp., Shigella spp., E. coli, Salmonella spp., and Vibrio cholerae.

Officials suggest that the infections point to contaminated water and poor hygiene practices.

Tragically, three deaths have been reported in the community.

Posthumous tests confirmed all three individuals were infected with Vibrio cholerae.

Current Status of the Outbreak

  • Reported Cases: 15 cases of acute watery diarrhea.
  • Confirmed Cholera Cases: Six confirmed through rapid tests, and one through culture.
  • Deaths: Three fatalities, all linked to confirmed cholera infections.
  • Recovered Patients: Eleven individuals have fully recovered and been discharged.

County health officials are urging residents to maintain strict hygiene measures, including treating drinking water and ensuring proper sanitation.

They also emphasized the need for vigilance and early reporting of symptoms, which include severe diarrhea and dehydration.

The public has been advised to avoid consuming untreated water and food from unregulated vendors.

Local authorities have intensified efforts to control the spread, including community education and enhanced surveillance.

This outbreak has highlighted the urgent need for improved access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities in the region.

Health officials are working closely with local hospitals and public health teams to prevent further spread of the disease and manage the outbreak effectively.
