KPLC Announces Power Outage in 7 Counties This Sunday Amid Heavy Downpour

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Power has announced a planned power interruption in parts of seven counties this Sunday, citing routine maintenance works amid ongoing heavy rains across the country.

In a public notice issued Saturday, the power utility outlined affected areas and urged residents to take precaution, noting that supply lines should be treated as live at all times, even during the outage hours.

Nairobi to See Widespread Disruptions

In the capital, power cuts will impact large swathes of Nairobi West and Dandora from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In Dandora, affected areas include Lucky Summer, Tiba and Ngunyumu primary schools, Ngomongo, the Dandora dumpsite, and Dandora Phase 2, 3, and 4, as well as surrounding institutions and commercial premises such as Co-operative Bank and Uprising.

The disruption in Nairobi West is more extensive, covering residential areas and key institutions including:

  • Health facilities: Nairobi West Hospital, Mbagathi Hospital, Defense Memorial Hospital, Texas Cancer Center
  • Education centers: Moi Education Centre, Sunshine School, Lang’ata Primary, School for the Blind, Tabsera Academy, Bellevue School, White Star Academy
  • Estates and neighborhoods: Akila III, Airport View, Jonathan Ngeno, Dam Estate, Deep West, Five Star Estates, Montezuma area, AMREF, Canaan Estate, Nyayo Highrise, Akiba Estates, Soledo Springs, Missionary School, Ruby Estates, Midlands Court, Bandari Villas
  • Government & infrastructure: Entire Wilson Airport, Nairobi West Prison, Uhuru Garden Estate, Lang’ata Road, Mbagathi Road corridor
  • Religious institutions: St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, Masjid Bukhari Mosque, Deliverance Church

Landmarks such as T-Mall, Quickmart Nairobi West, and Weston Hotel will also be affected.

Outages Also Planned in Surrounding Counties

In Machakos County, the blackout will hit Athi River, including areas such as:

  • Acacia Estate
  • Junior Staff Estate
  • Stoni Athi
  • Daystar University and nearby hostels (Rawa)
  • Intercounty and Lukenya Village
  • Lukenya Girls and Boys schools
  • Kasanga Mulwa

North Rift: Partial Uasin Gishu Outage

In Uasin Gishu, the area surrounding St. Lukes Hospital in Eldoret will be without power from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Other affected sites include:

  • Moi University Dental School
  • MTRH Farewell Home
  • Komora Estate
  • Shree Hari Apartments
  • Shiv Court

Western Kenya: Kisumu and Siaya Affected

In Siaya County, parts of Boro will experience blackouts, including:

  • Mbaga Mission Hospital
  • Mulaha Secondary School
  • Boro Market
  • Hawinga, Pisoko, Uradi, and Nyadorera

In Kisumu County, two areas will be affected:

  • Chebirir and Chemelil: Prime Steel, Rai Cement, Chebirir Primary School, and West Kenya Weighbridge
  • Kisumu Town and environs: From 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., power will be cut in Milimani, Nyamasaria (Jumbo Factory), Ahero, Manyatta, Kibos, Chiga, Obwolo, Nyalenda, Dunga, and the Ring Road area

Kiambu County: Ruiru’s Industrial Belt Hit

In Kiambu County, power supply will be interrupted in Ruiru and surrounding areas including:

  • Ruiru Prisons
  • Super Foam
  • DPI
  • Kenya Tents
  • Redland Roses
  • Shell OJ Petrol Station
  • OJ area and Sweet Water
  • Membley Riverside and parts of Tatu City
  • BTL Police Camp and Hardy Kenya

Coastal Region: Parts of Kilifi Go Dark

In Kilifi County, the outage will impact parts of Kanamai and Vipingo, including a number of industrial facilities:

  • Greenwood, Ashut Plastics, Coca-Cola Bottlers, Mombasa Apparel, Milly Fruits, Mzuri Sweets, Umoja Rubber
  • Ogalis, Khosla Farm, Pentagon, UB40 area, North Coast Medical College, Bomani Dispensary
  • Residential estates: Kikambala Housing, Bomani 3 Stars, Bioboo, Mamba, Palepale, Junju Village, Mwembetsungu
  • Other areas: Tropical Sea Life, Coast Apparel, Petrocity Sokoni, Mtwapa Market, Rubis Mtwapa, Kwa Radar, Ndonya Nyati

Kenya Power said the scheduled outages are part of routine upgrades and repairs to its network to ensure safe and reliable supply, especially during the ongoing rainy season that has affected parts of the grid.

While the outages are planned and temporary, they come at a time when many parts of the country are grappling with the impact of floods, damaged infrastructure, and unpredictable weather patterns.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, charge essential devices, secure backup power if available, and stay updated via KPLC’s social media platforms or official website.
