NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a temporary closure of Jamhuri Road this weekend to pave the way for the construction of key drainage and sewerage systems linked to the ongoing Talanta Sports City Project.
In a public notice, KURA Director General Silas Kinoti said the road will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday, October 10, to 11 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
“The closure will facilitate construction of essential drainage and sewer infrastructure as part of the Talanta Sports City Project,” KURA said in a statement.
Motorists are advised to use Sanctuary Road and Kibera Drive as alternative routes during the two-day closure.
The authority added that traffic marshals will be deployed to help manage flow and minimise inconvenience.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their cooperation as we implement these critical upgrades,” the statement read.
According to KURA, the drainage and sewerage works are crucial to addressing frequent flooding around Ngong Road and Jamhuri, which has in the past disrupted transport and damaged infrastructure.
The new system will connect to the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) network to improve stormwater management and waste discharge efficiency within the Ngong Road–Dagoretti–Kibera corridor.
The works are part of a broader government effort to modernise Nairobi’s sports, road, and utility infrastructure under the Talanta Hela programme spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.
Launched in 2023, Talanta Hela seeks to nurture and monetise sports and creative talent, with the Talanta Sports City envisioned as a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment complex near the Nairobi Showground.
The project, being constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), will feature a 60,000-seat stadium dedicated to football and rugby, with adjacent facilities for athletics, training, and creative industry events.
The facility will include VIP lounges, media and medical rooms, doping control facilities, and LED lighting for night matches.
Sustainability elements such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting have also been incorporated.
Completion of the project is targeted for December 2025.
KURA has urged motorists to plan their travel and follow road signage during the temporary closure. More information is available on www.kura.go.ke.
