Landlords to File Taxes Online as KRA Launches New eRITS System

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled a new electronic system aimed at simplifying rental income tax collection and bringing more property owners into the tax net.

In a public notice issued Thursday, the authority announced the rollout of the Electronic Rental Income Tax System (eRITS), a platform designed to streamline filing and payment of Monthly Rental Income (MRI) tax.

Accessible through erits.kra.go.ke and the eCitizen portal, the system allows landlords and property owners to update property details, file returns, and make tax payments with greater ease.

KRA said the new platform is part of ongoing reforms to digitize tax administration and plug revenue leakages.

“Rental income tax is a key component of national revenue, and KRA is committed to supporting taxpayers with simplified digital solutions that ease compliance,” Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga said in the notice.

Under Kenya’s tax laws, rental income tax is due monthly, with penalties and interest charged for late or non-compliance.

By migrating to eRITS, landlords are expected to benefit from more efficient record-keeping while reducing errors that have previously undermined revenue collection.

The launch of eRITS comes at a time when the government faces pressure to boost domestic revenues to fund public services and development projects.

Rental income tax has been flagged as an area with significant compliance gaps, and KRA is banking on technology to close them.

To support taxpayers, KRA has set up multiple help channels, including an email contact centre (contactcentre@kra.go.ke), a hotline and WhatsApp number (0711 099 999), and its social media pages. Assistance will also be available at KRA service centres countrywide.

The authority further cautioned landlords against falling prey to fraudsters, stressing that it does not engage agents or charge fees for recruitment or registration of taxpayers.

The rollout of eRITS adds to a series of digital innovations introduced in recent years, including iTax and electronic tax registers (ETRs), as KRA steps up efforts to modernize revenue collection and expand the tax base.
