Former IPOA Chairman Macharia Njeru Enters 2027 Presidential Race

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) chairman Macharia Njeru has declared his bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, adding his name to the growing list of Kenyans seeking to succeed President William Ruto.

Njeru made the announcement on Monday, October 5, saying he would contest on the Mwongozo Mpya Party ticket.

“The journey begins. Today, I officially announce my bid for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya,” Njeru said.

The former IPOA chairman said his decision to enter politics followed repeated questions from friends and family about why professionals with experience in public institutions often avoid politics, which he described as a difficult and “dirty” space.

Njeru Says ‘Good People’ Should Enter Politics

Njeru argued that the reluctance of professionals to participate in politics contributes to Kenya’s governance challenges.

He said the absence of what he termed “good people” from politics leaves voters with limited choices between candidates they may not consider suitable.

The lawyer cited challenges affecting access to basic services, including water and healthcare, as among the issues that motivated his decision to seek the presidency.

He also pointed to youth employment, citing the African Youth Outlook 2026 report and saying many young Kenyans remain in informal work despite having university and postgraduate qualifications.

Njeru said some degree holders end up working as watchmen or in construction despite their educational qualifications.

Njeru Warns Of Economic Pressure

On the economy, Njeru warned that Kenya risks an economic crisis because of what he described as a widening gap between government revenue and expenditure.

He claimed Kenya collects about Sh2.8 trillion in taxes but spends approximately Sh4.5 trillion, leaving the Government to borrow a further Sh1.5 trillion.

The figures were part of Njeru’s argument that Kenya needs stronger financial management and more disciplined public spending.

Njeru has also criticised government expenditure and said he would seek to reduce wastage if elected. He has argued that some supplementary budgets could be substantially reduced without affecting the functioning of government.

Former IPOA Chairman Brings Public And Private Sector Experience

Njeru served as IPOA’s inaugural chairman from 2012 to 2016 and has practised commercial law for more than three decades.

He has also held leadership positions in the private sector, including board roles in financial institutions in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

Njeru has previously served as Vice Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission, according to his political profile.

He said his experience across the public and private sectors would give him a different perspective on running the country.

“I dare say that if I am your next president, I will be the first president who has served extensively both in the private sector and in the public sector,” Njeru said.

Njeru To Take Campaign Across Kenya

The presidential hopeful said he intends to take his campaign across the country as he seeks support ahead of the 2027 election.

Mwongozo Mpya Party lists Njeru as its founding party leader. The party’s stated platform includes integrity, transparency and accountability in public affairs, alongside reforms in education, healthcare, agriculture, policing and the economy.

Njeru joins a growing field of politicians and other aspirants positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential contest.

His declaration comes as political parties and presidential hopefuls intensify preparations ahead of the General Election.
