Madagascar’s President Rajoelina Flees Country as Military Mutiny Deepens

Date:

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar — Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has reportedly fled the country aboard a French military aircraft as escalating protests and a growing military mutiny threaten to topple his government, Radio France Internationale (RFI) reported on Sunday.

The reported evacuation was said to follow an understanding with French President Emmanuel Macron, though French officials have denied any direct military intervention in Madagascar’s internal crisis.

Nationwide unrest, which began on September 25 over severe water and electricity shortages, has spiraled into mass demonstrations demanding Rajoelina’s resignation.

What started as protests against deteriorating living conditions has morphed into a movement questioning his legitimacy and governance.

Security forces have used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse demonstrators in the capital, Antananarivo, and other cities.

However, parts of the paramilitary gendarmerie have reportedly joined the protesters, seizing control of some units and raising fears of a full-scale military split.

Rajoelina had been scheduled to address the nation on Saturday, but the televised speech was abruptly cancelled.

His current whereabouts remain unclear, with conflicting reports over whether he has left the country or is in hiding.

The unrest marks the most serious challenge to Rajoelina’s presidency since his re-election in 2023.

Analysts say the combination of public anger, economic hardship, and fractures within the security forces has placed his administration on the brink of collapse.

The United Nations and regional partners have expressed concern over the deteriorating situation, urging dialogue to restore calm.
