Nairobi Comes to a Standstill as Nation Prepares for Odinga’s Final March

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — As Kenya waits anxiously for the arrival of Raila Odinga’s body from India, the atmosphere at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is tense and tightly controlled.

Security has been visibly ramped up, and key political figures are reportedly present to oversee arrival protocols and manage the inevitable public reaction.

At JKIA, eyewitnesses say the usual arrival halls have been cordoned off and security forces are enforcing restricted access. Some flights have been delayed, and parts of the tarmac have been cleared to accommodate dignitaries and state protocol teams.

State House and security agencies are coordinating the reception, expected to include President Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and other senior officials.

Observers believe these leaders will be on hand to receive the coffin and lead the national mourning procession. Reports from media outlets suggest that Ruto, Kenyatta, and Kindiki are already at JKIA in readiness.

Supporters of Odinga have gathered in nearby districts, many holding portraits and chanting slogans in his honor. Their movement has been restricted closer to airport perimeters, with police advising calm and emphasizing the need to maintain order.

Inside the State House, a special National Security Council meeting is underway to finalise logistics, security, and funeral arrangements. Sources say the agenda includes establishing a temporary mortuary setup at JKIA, coordinating health and diplomatic clearances, and preparing routes for the transfer to Nairobi for public viewing.

While much remains unannounced formally, the mood at JKIA reflects a nation poised between grief and ceremony, with every protocol and precaution likely to be under intense scrutiny.
