Six Injured After Retaining Wall Collapse at Nairobi Construction Site, NCA Confirms

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Six construction workers were injured Wednesday morning after a retaining wall collapsed at a commercial development site along Kirinyaga Road in Starehe Subcounty, the National Construction Authority (NCA) has confirmed.

In a statement dated February 11, 2026, the Authority said the incident occurred at Plot LR NRB BLK 10/278 during foundation works at the proposed 10-storey commercial development.

“Six (6) construction workers were injured during the incident, and they were promptly evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” the NCA said.

According to the regulator, the collapse involved a retaining wall that was functioning as shoring in an earlier excavated area at the site.

The project is registered with the Authority under registration number 53128915711211 and is owned by Accra Trade Centre Limited. The contractor on record is Getec Contractors Ltd (35035/B/1117).

The consultants listed for the project include Architect Mbugua H. Kahiga (A916), Engineer Evans Mbugua Kamau (A2900), and Quantity Surveyor Listone Makanda Moranga (Q881).

“The area has been secured and cordoned off to prevent further harm. Relevant enforcement agencies are currently conducting investigations into the incident, and a comprehensive report will be issued upon conclusion of the same,” the statement signed by Eng. Maurice Akech, Executive Director and Registrar of Contractors, said.

The collapse has renewed scrutiny on compliance with construction safety standards in Nairobi’s Central Business District and surrounding commercial zones, where rapid development has increased excavation and high-rise projects.

Under the National Construction Authority Act No. 41 of 2011, the NCA is mandated to regulate, streamline, and build capacity in Kenya’s construction industry to ensure quality and safety standards are upheld.

Developers and contractors are required to adhere to approved designs, structural integrity guidelines, and occupational safety regulations.

Construction safety has remained a concern in Nairobi and other urban centres, particularly during excavation and foundation stages, which pose heightened structural risks if shoring and reinforcement measures are inadequate.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the condition of the injured workers. Further details are expected once investigations are completed.

The incident adds to ongoing conversations around enforcement of building codes, supervision by registered professionals, and accountability within Kenya’s construction sector.
