Nairobi to Drop to 9°C as Weatherman Predicts Rain, Chilly Nights and Sunshine Across Kenya

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyans should brace for a mix of rain, sunshine, and cloudy skies in the coming days, as the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) issued a new five-day forecast showing shifting weather across most parts of the country.

In an advisory released Friday, June 20, the weatherman said Nairobi will face overcast conditions and intermittent showers throughout the day and night, with temperatures ranging from a daytime high of 27°C to a nighttime low of 9°C—a stark chill for residents of the capital.

The forecast covers the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka, all expected to experience similar weather patterns.

Coastal Sun With Patchy Showers

In contrast, the Coast region—including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal strip of Tana River—will remain mostly sunny during the day.

However, some light showers are anticipated in select areas. Daytime temperatures could reach 31°C, with nights staying warm at around 21°C.

Rain Dominates the West and Lake Basin

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the central Rift Valley are forecast to see heavy rainfall, frequent showers, and thunderstorms.

Counties expected to be affected include Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Bomet, Kericho, and Kakamega, among others.

South-Eastern Intervals

In the South-Eastern Lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland Tana River, expect mostly cloudy mornings giving way to sunny intervals.

Some localized showers may occur Saturday afternoon. Daytime temperatures are forecast to climb to 31°C, dropping to 11°C at night.

North-Western Rains and Heat

The North-Western counties of Turkana and Samburu will experience a mix of thunderstorms, rain showers, and clear periods.

Temperatures may soar to 36°C during the day, with night lows dipping to 9°C.

Sunny Days Ahead in the North-East

Meanwhile, North-Eastern Kenya, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will enjoy mainly sunny days and partly cloudy nights.

This region remains the hottest, with temperatures peaking at 37°C during the day and cooling to around 15°C at night.
