NTSA Orders Government Vehicles to Switch to New Reflective Number Plates Within 7 Days

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a one-week ultimatum to all National and County Government institutions to transition their fleets to the new generation reflective number plates.

In a notice dated August 22, NTSA reminded government agencies that the deadline for compliance is August 29, with applications to be submitted strictly through its online platform.

“The Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service directed your organisation to apply and fit new generation reflective plates on your vehicles,” the agency stated, underscoring the urgency of the directive with a red-highlighted reminder: “29th August is the deadline.”

The rollout, part of the government’s broader security strategy, seeks to improve vehicle identification and curb crimes linked to motor vehicles, including fraud and hit-and-run incidents.

The modern plates are designed to make tracing vehicles easier for authorities.

Government vehicles are now expected to “lead by example” in adopting the new system, following earlier phases targeting individual motorists.

Transport officers and government drivers have been advised to complete the application process immediately to avoid last-minute congestion on the portal.

Any inquiries, NTSA said, should be directed to the official support email, numberplates@ntsa.go.ke.

The warning is the latest push by the government to fast-track compliance in the nationwide rollout of digital number plates, which officials say are critical to road safety and national security.
