KWALE, Kenya – Police in Kwale County have apprehended 120 suspects linked to the notorious machete-wielding gang known as “Panga Boys,” which has been terrorizing residents in Diani.
The arrests come after a week-long police operation aimed at restoring security in the region.
Out of the 120 suspects, 63 have already been presented in court.
Authorities have sought an additional 14 days to detain 33 suspects for further investigations.
Meanwhile, 16 others are scheduled to be arraigned in court on Monday.
Police recovered seven machetes believed to have been used in criminal activities, 18 rolls of bhang, and several mobile phones during the crackdown.
Msambweni Sub-County Police Commander Robinson Lang’at assured the public that the operation to dismantle the gang would continue.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of Diani residents by completely neutralizing this gang,” Lang’at said.
Lang’at also announced that security measures would be intensified during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
He advised beach operators to vacate the beaches by 6:00 pm to maintain law and order.
Residents in Diani have welcomed the arrests, expressing hope that the operation will restore peace and security.
Authorities have called on the community to cooperate by providing information to help eradicate criminal elements in the region.
