NAIROBI, Kenya — A man suspected of being part of a car break-in syndicate that has been targeting motorists across Nairobi and its surrounding areas has been arrested following a dramatic failed escape attempt at Sameer Business Park.
The suspect, identified as Malcolm Okello, 35, was apprehended on Sunday, August 3, 2026, after security guards intercepted a vehicle they believed was connected to the theft of valuables from a parked car.
According to detectives, the incident began after a motorist returned to her vehicle at Sameer Business Park only to discover it had been broken into. A laptop, tablet and charger had reportedly been stolen.
Suspicious Vehicle Triggers Chase
Security personnel at the business park quickly turned their attention to a Toyota Land Cruiser bearing registration KDT 122Q, which was parked nearby with two occupants.
As guards attempted to inspect the vehicle, the driver allegedly sped off in a bid to escape while the passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
The escape attempt, however, was short-lived after the vehicle was blocked at the park’s exit, allowing security officers to corner the suspect and place him under arrest.
Detectives Recover Stolen Property and Suspected Burglary Tools
A subsequent search of the Land Cruiser led to the recovery of items believed to have been stolen from the complainant, including the missing laptop and charger.
Detectives also recovered:
- A motor vehicle number plate KDG 453W
- Wireless door jammers
- A metallic door-breaking tool
Investigators believe the recovered equipment was being used to facilitate vehicle break-ins targeting motorists at parking facilities across Nairobi and neighbouring counties.
Vehicle Allegedly Fitted With Fake Registration Plates
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Land Cruiser had allegedly been fitted with fake registration plates to evade detection while carrying out criminal activities.
Police say the vehicle is now being linked to a series of similar incidents involving thefts from locked vehicles in different parts of Nairobi.
The recovered exhibits, together with the impounded vehicle, remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Second Suspect Still at Large
Authorities confirmed that the second suspect who escaped during the attempted arrest remains at large.
Detectives have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the individual as investigations into the suspected criminal network continue.
Meanwhile, Malcolm Okello is undergoing police processing and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
