Supreme Court Recess Set for December 21 to January 13 — CJ Koome

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Chief Justice Martha Koome has announced that the Supreme Court will proceed on its annual December recess from December 21, 2025, to January 13, 2026, both days inclusive.

In a gazette notice, Justice Koome said the Supreme Court Registry will remain open to the public on weekdays, excluding public holidays, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm during the recess period.

“During this period, the Supreme Court Registry shall remain open to the public from 8.30 am to 5 pm on all weekdays other than public holidays,” the CJ said.

While full hearings will be suspended, a duty judge will be on standby to handle urgent matters, including applications for injunctions and other time-sensitive cases.

Legal practitioners and litigants have been advised to plan accordingly, as the recess period could affect hearing schedules and case timelines.

Alongside the recess announcement, the Chief Justice also unveiled several key judicial and administrative appointments, signaling ongoing efforts to strengthen specialized courts and tribunals.

Under the Sports Act (Cap. 223), the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) appointed Allan Mola Owinyi as Deputy Chairperson of the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) for a term running from October 7, 2025, to May 16, 2030.

The JSC also appointed five new members to the tribunal for a five-year term beginning September 15, 2025.

They are Eddie Omondi, Victor Obwaya Omwebu, Aleli Peris Mukoko, Nicodemus Kimanthi Musau, and Luke Wamugunda Irungu.

The appointments are expected to boost the Tribunal’s capacity to handle the rising number of sports-related disputes in Kenya.

In a separate notice, Koome also announced the establishment of a new Environment and Land Court (ELC) station in Limuru, further expanding access to justice for land and environmental matters in Kiambu County and beyond.
