Trans Nzoia Tops Kenya in Agriculture Performance as Embu Records Biggest Improvement – Infotrak

TRANS NZOIA, Kenya – Trans Nzoia County has reclaimed its position as Kenya’s best-performing county in agriculture, while Embu recorded the biggest improvement in the latest Infotrak CountyTrak Performance Index, highlighting changing fortunes in county agricultural service delivery.

According to the 2026 CountyTrak Performance Index released by Infotrak, Trans Nzoia scored 60 per cent to top the agriculture rankings among Kenya’s 47 counties.

Murang’a followed in second place with 56 per cent, while Kiambu ranked third after posting 55 per cent.

Uasin Gishu came fourth with 54 per cent, ahead of Elgeyo Marakwet, which recorded 53 per cent.

Kericho, Tharaka Nithi and Homa Bay shared sixth position after each scoring 51 per cent, while Nandi and Bungoma rounded out the top ten with 50 per cent each.

Agriculture Records Modest National Improvement

The report shows that the national average score for agriculture improved to 44.4 per cent in 2026, up from 43 per cent recorded in 2024.

However, the sector remains below the 51 per cent national score achieved in 2023.

Despite the improvement, agriculture ranked as the fourth-best performing devolved function, behind education, environment and natural resources, and energy.

The assessment measured public perception of county governments’ effectiveness in supporting agricultural production and food security.

Residents evaluated counties based on their ability to:

  • Support crop production and marketing
  • Improve livestock and fisheries production
  • Enhance access to affordable food
  • Control livestock diseases
  • Manage disposal of dead animals

Trans Nzoia Reclaims Top Position

The latest rankings mark a strong comeback for Trans Nzoia after the county’s score fell from 62 per cent in 2023 to 51 per cent in 2024.

Its rebound to 60 per cent represents a nine-point improvement and places the county 16 percentage points above the national average.

Infotrak noted that Trans Nzoia had “reclaimed the top spot”, describing its performance as one of the strongest function scores recorded in the latest index.

Embu Emerges as Biggest Improver

While Trans Nzoia topped the rankings, Embu registered the most significant improvement among all counties.

The county climbed 19 positions, rising from 32nd place in 2024 to 13th in 2026, making it the biggest mover in the agriculture category.

Infotrak described Embu’s performance as “the largest gain under this function.”

Nandi also posted impressive progress after moving up 17 places, from 26th to ninth.

Kericho climbed 13 positions, improving from 19th to sixth, while Garissa rose 11 places, moving from 44th to 33rd.

Siaya also registered notable improvement after climbing from 47th position to 37th.

Kiambu Continues Strong Rise

Among the leading counties, Kiambu recorded one of the most remarkable long-term improvements.

The county rose from 27th position in 2023 to third place in 2026, with its score increasing from 46 per cent in 2024 to 55 per cent this year.

The report identified Kiambu as the fastest-rising county among the top-ranked performers.

Survey Covered All 47 Counties

The findings are based on a nationwide survey conducted between January and May 2026.

Infotrak collected views from 36,200 respondents across all 47 counties, covering 290 constituencies and 1,450 wards.

Residents rated county performance on a scale of one to ten, with the results aggregated to determine performance across devolved functions.

According to Infotrak, the CountyTrak Index provides robust ward-level statistics reflecting residents’ perceptions of how county governments are delivering devolved services.
