‘We’re Not in Bed’: Kabogo Defends Govt’s Relationship with Media Council

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has denied claims that the government is overly cosy with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), asserting that the media regulator remains independent and committed to professionalism.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Media Summit in South C, Nairobi, Kabogo said the MCK is not working to appease the state, countering public perceptions of government-media collusion.

“The government is not in bed with the Media Council of Kenya—if I may use that language, because it is commonly referred to, meaning we are not doing things just to help the government,” he said.

Kabogo commended the Council for upholding ethical journalism and urged media practitioners to continue holding the government accountable—responsibly.

“Let us report things as they are. It is important to report responsibly,” he said.

Clarifying Ruto’s Abduction Remarks

The CS also criticised what he termed misreporting of President William Ruto’s recent comments on enforced disappearances.

On Monday, Ruto stated that all Kenyans previously reported missing under suspicious circumstances had been reunited with their families—a statement that sparked public confusion and concern over a possible admission of past abductions by state agents.

Kabogo said the story had been “twisted,” arguing that the President’s remarks were taken out of context.

“That is not how it was said. It is inappropriate to misrepresent facts, especially on sensitive national matters,” he added.

Ruto had made the remarks during a joint press briefing with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending enforced disappearances.

Press Freedom and Media Collaboration

Kabogo reiterated the government’s respect for press freedom as enshrined in the Constitution, pledging support for a robust media environment.

“The government will not suppress the media; press freedom is vital and must be protected,” he said, adding that his ministry is working to build a media ecosystem that serves the public interest.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance digital infrastructure, media literacy, and community media development under the government’s broader digital transformation agenda.
