Google’s Gemini AI Assistant Surpasses One Billion Monthly Users

Date:

SAN FRANCISCO, US- Google’s artificial intelligence assistant Gemini has surpassed one billion monthly users, marking a major milestone for the technology giant as competition intensifies among leading AI companies.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on Tuesday, describing Gemini as the company’s fastest-growing product ever and the 14th Google product to reach one billion users.

The figure refers to people using the Gemini app and web experience on a monthly basis, rather than users of Google’s broader AI features embedded across products such as Search and Workspace. The milestone underscores the scale Google can achieve by integrating its AI technology into an ecosystem used by billions of people.

Gemini’s rapid growth comes as Google seeks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive artificial intelligence market dominated by companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and China’s DeepSeek.

Gemini gains ground in AI race

Google has invested heavily in Gemini as it seeks to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.

Gemini had about 750 million monthly users at the end of 2025, meaning its user base has grown substantially in less than a year.

The latest milestone also comes as OpenAI’s ChatGPT has crossed the one-billion-user mark, although the two companies report their figures differently. OpenAI recently said ChatGPT had reached one billion users across its interfaces, while Google’s latest figure specifically concerns Gemini’s monthly user base.

The figures highlight how quickly AI assistants have moved from emerging technology to mass-market consumer products.

Google’s biggest advantage is the scale of its existing ecosystem. Gemini is available through dedicated mobile and web experiences while also being increasingly integrated into Google’s broader products and services.

That distribution gives Google access to a huge potential audience as it competes with AI companies that have had to build their consumer user bases largely around standalone products.

AI competition intensifies

The milestone comes at a challenging time for Google as the company continues to reorganise its AI operations and invest heavily in developing more capable models.

Google DeepMind, the division responsible for Gemini, has undergone changes in its leadership and research teams, while the company continues to face pressure from rivals developing increasingly sophisticated models.

OpenAI, meanwhile, has expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities and user base, while Anthropic has established Claude as a major competitor, particularly among businesses and developers.

Chinese companies including DeepSeek and Alibaba have also accelerated development of cheaper and increasingly capable AI models, adding another dimension to the global technology race.

The competition is increasingly shifting beyond chatbot popularity to areas such as coding, reasoning, autonomous AI agents and enterprise applications.

Google’s massive distribution advantage

For Google, Gemini’s one-billion-user milestone demonstrates the importance of distribution in the AI race.

The company can introduce AI features to users who already rely on Google Search, Android, Gmail, Maps, YouTube and other services. This gives Gemini an advantage in reaching consumers without requiring them to seek out an unfamiliar platform.

The rapid growth also provides Google with a large pool of users whose interactions can help inform product development and demonstrate demand for increasingly sophisticated AI services.

Race for the next stage of AI

Google’s Gemini milestone comes as technology companies pour billions of dollars into computing infrastructure, data centres and AI research.

The industry’s focus is increasingly moving toward systems capable of performing complex tasks with less human intervention, including AI agents that can interact with software and complete multi-step assignments.

Google is also seeking to strengthen Gemini’s role across its wider ecosystem, potentially making the assistant a more central interface through which users interact with Google’s services.

With Gemini now reaching one billion monthly users, Google has established one of the largest consumer audiences in artificial intelligence.

The next challenge will be turning that enormous reach into a durable advantage in a market where OpenAI, Anthropic and Chinese AI developers continue to improve their models and compete aggressively for users, developers and businesses.
