Two Armed Robbery Suspects Arrested as Police Recover AK-47 in Garissa County

Date:

GARISSA, Kenya — Police in Garissa County have arrested two armed robbery suspects and recovered an AK-47 rifle following a robbery with violence and a separate shooting incident along the Alikune–Dagahaley Road, the National Police Service (NPS) has said.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NPS said officers from Dagahaley Police Station, led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), working jointly with detectives from the Dadaab Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), launched a coordinated pursuit after reports of the attacks that had left road users and residents terrorised.

The operation led to the arrest of a 26-year-old suspect at Dagahaley Market.

Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to his involvement in the crimes and disclosed that the firearm used had been hired specifically to carry out the attacks, police said.

He then led officers to a concealed location where an AK-47 rifle was recovered. The weapon had been wrapped in a jacket, hidden inside a gunny bag, and buried underground. Police also recovered a magazine loaded with three rounds of ammunition.

Second Suspect Arrested in Ifo Refugee Camp

The arrest led to a second breakthrough when the suspect guided officers to a residence in Bula Kheir Village, within the Ifo Refugee Camp, where his alleged accomplice was arrested.

Both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

Police said the hunt for one more suspect linked to the incidents is ongoing.

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Security

The National Police Service said it has heightened patrols and surveillance in the area as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in Garissa County.

The National Police Service remains committed to decisively combating violent crime and ensuring the safety of all residents in Garissa County,” the statement said.

The recovery of the assault rifle comes amid continued security operations in the region aimed at dismantling criminal networks and preventing the proliferation of illegal firearms.
