Washington, United States – Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb has accused Donald Trump of weaponising the justice system to punish political enemies, calling the indictment of ex-FBI director James Comey an attempt to “rewrite history” and conceal Trump’s criminal past.
Cobb, who once managed Trump’s legal response to the Mueller probe, told CBS’s Face the Nation that the case against Comey for allegedly lying to Congress was weak and unlikely to hold in court. He criticised Trump for replacing a federal prosecutor with White House aide Lindsey Halligan, who lacks prosecutorial experience, to drive the case.
“Trump wants the next generation not to know that he incited an insurrection, refused to concede power, and stole classified documents. He’s a convicted felon, and anyone who crossed him is now in danger,” Cobb said.
The former insider argued that Attorney General Pam Bondi had reduced the Department of Justice to a political tool, abandoning impartiality. “It’s all about even-handedness, but now it’s just, ‘Prosecute my enemies,’” Cobb warned.
He also predicted the Comey case would collapse, noting that only 14 out of 23 grand jurors approved two counts, while the most serious charge was rejected outright. “At trial, unanimity is required. I don’t see any way this survives,” he said.
Cobb’s remarks add to growing alarm in Washington over what critics call Trump’s authoritarian turn in his second term. Lawmakers and legal experts warn that the indictment marks a dangerous precedent of criminalising political opposition
