Jubilee Opens Fresh Coalition Talks as Matiang’i’s Team Targets Ukombozi Alliance Deal

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Jubilee Party has formed a three-member committee to review the proposed agreement for The Ukombozi Alliance and explore partnerships with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The move signals a fresh push by the party led by presidential aspirant Fred Matiang’i to shape opposition cooperation, with the new team expected to recommend changes to the alliance’s draft Deed of Agreement before Jubilee’s National Executive Committee (NEC) makes further decisions.

The committee was approved during an NEC meeting chaired by Matiang’i on Tuesday, October 27, with former Murang’a Senator Kembi Gitura appointed its chairperson. National Secretary General Moitalel Ole Kenta and Janet Ong’era will serve as members.

Jubilee announced the appointments on Wednesday, October 28, saying the committee would engage like-minded political parties and coalitions to identify areas of cooperation and strengthen coordination ahead of the polls.

Ukombozi Alliance Agreement Under Review

One of the committee’s central responsibilities will be to examine the draft Deed of Agreement for The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) and recommend amendments where necessary.

The review comes after the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance adopted the Ukombozi Alliance name in September, with former President Uhuru Kenyatta designated to chair the coalition. The proposed agreement and the relationships among its constituent parties have since remained part of wider opposition discussions.

Jubilee’s latest resolution does not announce a new coalition agreement or confirm that negotiations with other parties have been concluded. Instead, the committee has been tasked with assessing the draft framework and exploring possible cooperation before submitting its recommendations to the NEC.

The party said the initiative was informed by its membership in the Ukombozi Alliance and the need to build consensus among opposition formations.

“The NEC reaffirmed the Party’s commitment to constructive dialogue, cooperation and the pursuit of a common agenda for the transformation of our country,” Ole Kenta said in the statement.

The resolutions did not specify a deadline for the committee to submit its recommendations or identify which parties it would approach first.

Coalition Talks Ahead of 2027

The committee’s work comes as opposition leaders continue consultations over possible electoral cooperation and how competing political interests could be accommodated in a broader alliance.

Matiang’i has previously acknowledged that reaching an agreement among opposition parties would be difficult, particularly where leaders must reconcile different ambitions and agree on leadership and power-sharing arrangements.

The review of the Ukombozi Alliance agreement could therefore provide Jubilee with an opportunity to assess the terms governing cooperation and determine what changes it considers necessary before committing to further arrangements.

However, the party has not announced the outcome of the review, and the committee’s recommendations will still require consideration by the NEC.

Jubilee Fills Two Vacant Party Positions

In separate resolutions, the NEC approved two interim appointments to fill vacant positions within the party.

Lucy Naisaiae Kashu was named interim chairperson of the Jubilee Party Women’s Caucus, while Madina Yunis Mahat was appointed interim Deputy National Organising Secretary.

Both will serve in an acting capacity as the party fills the vacant posts.

The coalition committee and internal appointments form part of Jubilee’s organisational preparations as political parties position themselves for the 2027 General Election.

For now, the immediate task for Gitura and his colleagues is to review the Ukombozi Alliance agreement, explore possible partnerships and present recommendations to the party leadership before any further decisions are made.
