NAIROBI, Kenya- Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has fired a warning at the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), questioning why it invited ODM into the arrangement if it could form a government on its own.
“Kama mlikuwa mnaweza kutengeneza serikali pekee yenu, mbona mliita? Tulikuwa tu kwa barabara pole pole,” Junet said.
The statement comes amid tensions over ODM’s relationship with President William Ruto’s party and whether the opposition-turned-partner should support his 2027 re-election bid without conditions or first secure a written agreement.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has urged ODM leaders not to demand a signed pact from Ruto.
Speaking in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County, he said cooperation should be based on trust and goodwill.
He also cited the Kalenjin community’s support for the late Raila Odinga’s 2007 presidential campaign, saying it had not been conditional on a written agreement.
ODM pushes for written deal
Several ODM leaders have called for a written pre-election agreement setting out the terms of cooperation with UDA ahead of the 2027 General Election.
They argue a formal pact would clarify the parties’ commitments and protect ODM’s interests in a future government.
Homa Bay Governor and ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga has called for a 50-50 power-sharing arrangement, including equal Cabinet representation and ODM taking the Deputy President position if UDA fields the presidential candidate.
Other party leaders have said the ongoing negotiations should produce a written agreement.
Omollo’s remarks have drawn objections from ODM figures who say the party must set its negotiating position through its own structures.
ODM leader Oburu Oginga has said the party is capable of negotiating in its own interests, while insisting that implementation of the 10-point agenda agreed with Ruto remains a condition of ODM’s engagement with UDA.
He said talks should not be conducted as public spectacles and reaffirmed that full implementation of the 10-point agenda agreed with Ruto remains non-negotiable for ODM’s engagement with UDA.
