Kiraitu Murungi Meets Ruto Days After Complaining Meru Was Being Sidelined

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto met with former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi at State House, Nairobi, on Sunday, where the two leaders engaged in discussions on a range of national and regional matters.

The meeting, held just weeks after Kiraitu publicly criticized the government for sidelining leaders from the eastern part of Mt. Kenya in state appointments, marks a significant turn in the political landscape.

In December 2024, Kiraitu voiced his dissatisfaction with the administration’s lack of inclusivity, particularly for the Meru community.

Kiraitu Murungi, now serving as the chairman of the National Oil Corporation board, has been a prominent political figure, especially during the 2022 General Election when he supported Raila Odinga under the Azimio One Kenya coalition.

His alignment with the opposition, however, did not hinder his ability to engage in dialogue with the current administration.

The discussions at State House are seen as part of President Ruto’s broader strategy to strengthen his political base amid rising public discontent.

By reaching out to leaders across the political spectrum, including opposition figures like Kiraitu, President Ruto aims to consolidate his influence and address concerns about regional representation.

Murungi has been outspoken about the exclusion of the Meru community from key government positions, expressing frustration at what he described as the “disappearance of Meru from the national and political map of Kenya.”

While he congratulated those who secured appointments, Murungi’s remarks underscored a broader sentiment of neglect within his community.
