Makueni County Sacks Kee Hospital Nurse Over Threats to Patient

Date:

MAKUENI, Kenya — The Makueni County Government has terminated the contract of a nurse attached to Kee Level 3 Hospital in Kaiti Sub-County over alleged misconduct involving the intimidation of a patient.

According to an official letter dated October 22, 2025, and signed by Dr. Philip Maiko, the Kaiti Sub-County Medical Officer of Health, the nurse — identified as Nicodemus — was directed to hand over his duties before exiting the facility.

“I hereby write to provide an official notification of termination of your contract as a registered nurse with Kaiti Sub-County,” the letter reads in part.

“This termination of contract takes effect by Friday, October 24, 2025. Ensure handing over is done to the facility in charge before exit.”

Sources within the county’s health department said the disciplinary action followed an internal investigation into claims that the nurse sent threatening messages to a patient who allegedly declined to purchase medicine from a chemist he had recommended.

The incident was reported to the Sub-County Health Office, prompting a review by local administrators and the human resource department, which found the nurse’s conduct to be unethical and unprofessional.

Dr. Maiko, while confirming the termination, thanked the nurse for his past service to the institution but said the decision was necessary to uphold professional standards and patient trust within the county’s health system.

“As healthcare providers, our foremost duty is to serve patients with integrity and professionalism. Any conduct that compromises that trust cannot be tolerated,” said an official familiar with the disciplinary process.

The termination letter was copied to the Chief Officer for Health, Human Resource Management and Administration, the Director of Health Planning, and the Facility in Charge at Kee Health Centre for record and compliance purposes.

County officials say the move reflects Makueni’s zero-tolerance policy toward professional misconduct in public health facilities, stressing that disciplinary action will continue to be enforced to protect patients and maintain ethical standards.
