NAROK, Kenya — Police in Narok South Constituency have arrested a woman and her daughter following the death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl who allegedly sustained fatal injuries after being punished at home.
The deceased, Peris Chepng’eno, was a Grade Seven pupil at Kijapa Primary School in Sogoo Ward. Residents of Emitik village are mourning her death, describing it as shocking and deeply disturbing.
Witnesses, including the area chief and the girl’s uncle, said the teenager was allegedly beaten by her mother and sister over what were described as household-related mistakes. During the alleged punishment, the girl reportedly collapsed and lost consciousness.
Police confirmed that the two suspects are being held at Ololulung’a Police Station pending arraignment in court.
The girl’s body was moved to Longisa Hospital Mortuary in neighbouring Bomet County. A post-mortem examination is expected to establish the precise cause of death and inform possible charges.
Local administrators urged residents to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed without interference. They also appealed to families to adopt non-violent approaches when disciplining children.
The incident raises renewed concern about child protection and the limits of parental discipline under Kenyan law. Article 53(1)(d) of the Constitution guarantees every child the right to be protected from abuse, neglect, harmful cultural practices and all forms of violence. The Children Act, 2022 further criminalises child abuse and imposes a duty on parents and guardians to safeguard the welfare of minors.
Courts have consistently held that excessive punishment resulting in injury or death constitutes criminal liability.
The case also comes amid growing concern in parts of Narok South over reports of residents taking extreme measures in handling domestic disputes and disciplinary matters. Community leaders say there is a need for greater public awareness on lawful conflict resolution and child protection frameworks.
Investigators are expected to rely on medical findings, witness statements, and forensic evidence to determine whether the death amounts to murder, manslaughter, or another offence under the Penal Code.
As the village prepares for burial arrangements, residents described the young girl as quiet and hardworking, with dreams of completing her education.
Authorities said further updates will be issued once the post-mortem results are available and the suspects are formally charged.
