NAIROBI, Kenya — ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga has voiced support for youthful leadership within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying he wants Embakasi East MP Babu Owino to feel fully embraced in the party and not sidelined.
Speaking during an interview with NTV, Oburu dismissed claims that Babu Owino had been isolated within ODM, arguing that the young legislator represents the energy and ambition needed to propel the party into the future.
“I would like to bring Babu Owino and make him feel comfortable in the ODM Party,” Oburu said. “I don’t see any reason why Babu should be isolated. Babu wants to be governor in Nairobi; he can’t hire youth to shout his name in Bondo.”
Oburu’s comments come amid growing internal debates over ODM’s future direction following the party’s restructuring after Raila Odinga’s absence from active leadership. His remarks appeared to endorse a generational shift, encouraging the inclusion of youthful leaders in decision-making.
“I want young people to take over the leadership of the ODM Party,” the veteran legislator affirmed. “The youth have new ideas and the energy to move this party forward. We cannot remain in old politics when the country is moving on.”
At the same time, Oburu clarified that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is not an ODM member, addressing speculation about cross-party alliances and influence within city politics.
“Johnson Sakaja is not an ODM member,” he said firmly, distancing the opposition party from the governor’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) affiliation.
Political observers say Oburu’s remarks mark a shift toward reconciliation and rejuvenation within ODM ranks, particularly at a time when youthful leaders like Babu Owino, Edwin Sifuna, and others are asserting a stronger voice in party affairs.
“Oburu’s message is clear—he’s pushing for generational transition while maintaining party unity,” said political analyst Dr. Charles Njoroge. “It’s a strategic move to align ODM with Kenya’s evolving political demographics.”
The debate over ODM’s leadership succession and youth representation is expected to feature prominently in the upcoming delegates’ convention, where the party will chart its new roadmap ahead of the 2027 General Election.
