Over 3,000 Litres of Illicit Brew Destroyed as Crackdown Intensifies in Muhoroni

Date:

KISUMU, Kenya — A multi-agency security team in Muhoroni Sub-county has intensified the crackdown on illicit alcohol, seizing and destroying more than 3,000 litres of Kangara in a coordinated operation in Wagunga Village, Kamswa Sub-location, Nyagoma Location.

The operation, carried out on October 26, 2025, brought together officers from the Chemelil Police Post and National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) under the supervision of the National Police Service (NPS).

According to a statement released by the NPS, the joint team also dismantled several makeshift distilling units believed to have been used in the illegal manufacture of the illicit brew.

“During the operation, the team successfully confiscated and destroyed more than 3,000 litres of Kangara and dismantled several distilling apparatus used in the illegal brewing activities,” the statement read in part.

The police described the operation as part of a wider countywide and national campaign targeting illicit alcohol, which has been linked to rising cases of fatalities, blindness, and other public health risks across the country.

Authorities say the renewed enforcement efforts are aimed at protecting communities from harmful substances while also dismantling the networks behind illegal production and distribution.

“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to sustaining the crackdown on illicit brews and other illegal activities that endanger public health and safety,” the statement added.

Residents of Muhoroni and the wider Kisumu County have welcomed the move, saying the unchecked sale of cheap, unregulated alcohol has destroyed families and contributed to rising insecurity.

Local administrators have urged community members to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting individuals involved in illegal brewing and distribution.

The latest operation comes amid a nationwide directive from the government to intensify the fight against illicit alcohol, narcotics, and counterfeit goods.

Security teams have been conducting similar raids in Kericho, Nakuru, Kisii, and Nyeri counties, with hundreds of litres of illegal liquor destroyed and dozens of suspects arrested.

Police say such joint operations will continue across Kisumu County and the Nyanza region as part of sustained efforts to restore public order, promote health, and protect livelihoods from the devastating impact of illicit alcohol.
