NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s long-serving bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, has penned a moving tribute to his late boss, recalling nearly two decades of loyalty, friendship, and shared struggles.
In a written message read during Raila’s State Funeral Service at Nyayo Stadium on Thursday, Ogeta reflected on their 18-year journey together, describing it as more than a professional relationship.
“I confess I know no other human being on the African continent who came close to you as the First Among Equals on the quest for a freer and more equal continent, outside Nelson Mandela,” Ogeta wrote.
He likened Raila’s sacrifices for democracy to those of South Africa’s founding president, Nelson Mandela, calling him a “dependable father and mentor.”
“In the historical quest for a better Kenyan nation, your legacy was marked with personal sacrifices. Thank you for being a dependable father and mentor,” he added.
Ogeta, who served as Raila’s personal aide for nearly two decades, said their bond evolved into a “near-son relationship” — a testament to the deep trust and camaraderie that defined their years together.
The service, attended by dignitaries and thousands of mourners, featured heartfelt tributes from family and political allies, capturing the deep sense of loss across the country.
The four-day funeral programme for the late opposition leader will conclude with a private burial ceremony on Sunday in Bondo, Siaya County, where Raila will be laid to rest at his family home.
