University Student Charged With Sharing Fake KCSE 2025 Exam Papers

Date:

MERU, Kenya – A university student has been charged in court for allegedly publishing false information claiming to possess 2025 KCSE examination papers and for being found with several national identity cards belonging to other people.

Nasiuma Chrispinus Nambafu, a Bachelor of Science student studying mathematics and physics, was accused of circulating the claims through a WhatsApp group known as Teachers KNEC Exams 2025 between 2022 and October 11, 2025.

According to the charge sheet, Nambafu purported that the exam materials originated from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), with the intention of convincing members of the public to pay for access to the purported leaked papers.

The prosecution said his actions were aimed at defrauding unsuspecting individuals by making them believe the examination papers were genuine.

He is facing a charge of false publication contrary to Section 22(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, which criminalises knowingly spreading false information intended to cause others to act on it.

In addition to the cybercrime charge, Nambafu faces three counts of unlawful possession of national identity cards belonging to other people, contrary to the Registration of Persons Act.

The court heard that on October 11, 2025, in Kianjai, Tigania West, Meru County, the accused was found with ID cards belonging to Lucy Muthoni Kimencu and Bosco Kioko Wambua, as well as a third unidentified card, without any lawful cause or authority.

Nambafu denied all charges when he appeared in court.

Prosecutors requested that he be detained as investigations continue, including whether the alleged fake KCSE leak scheme is linked to the possession of the identity documents.

The court, however, released him on a cash bail of KSh100,000 pending the next hearing.
