NYANDARUA, Kenya – Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha has thrown his weight behind the ongoing nationwide livestock vaccination campaign.
The campaign seeks to vaccinate 22 million cattle and 50 million sheep and goats to curb diseases and improve the livestock sector, with the government footing the bill.
“As a country, we can only get better returns and value addition if we give way for the livestock vaccination so that the international certifiers can validate the status of free diseases in the country, and so that we can be validated to be able to respond to certain countries,” said the governor.
According to Governor Badilisha, his administration is focusing on livestock vaccination as an approved minimum practice.
As a county government, Governor Badilisha disclosed that they are exporting livestock to several countries in the Middle East, and even South Sudan.
“Once we are done with the livestock vaccination exercise, we shall consider exporting our animals to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other European nations,” added the county boss.
Why Kenya is producing fewer livestock products for the global market
Speaking when he presided over the launch of Kinangop Dairy Limited’s (KDL) five new yoghurt products, Governor Badilisha regretted that Kenya was producing fewer livestock products as a consumer.
“Another big challenge that we are faced with as a nation is that, in Kenya, we are a consumer country. We are net consumers of livestock products, meaning we are consuming less meat,” he further said.

Meanwhile, Governor Badilisha insisted that Kenyan farmers cannot export high-value livestock products or even dairy products as long as the country is not certified by the international community.
Through the initiative, the Kenyan government aims to protect the dairy sector, improve animal health, and ensure the country’s access to international markets for livestock products.
“This is why, as farmers, we should support the ongoing nationwide livestock vaccination because one of the reasons that we are not able to export to some countries is that our products are not certified,” said the governor.
The program aims to combat diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in cattle and Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in sheep and goats.
