NAIROBI, Kenya-  In a significant leap towards bridging the digital divide, Airtel Africa has successfully activated the first phase of the 2Africa submarine cable system. 

This monumental project connects Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa, promising to revolutionize internet connectivity across the continent.

The Power of 2Africa: Connecting Continents

The 2Africa cable system, one of the largest subsea projects globally, is designed to interlink Africa, Europe, and Asia. 

Stretching over 45,000 kilometers, it represents the world’s longest subsea cable network, bringing unprecedented connectivity to the African continent.

Airtel Africa, through its wholesale arm Airtel Telesonic, has partnered with Alcatel Submarine Networks, a leader in optical submarine networks.

This collaboration ensures the deployment of cutting-edge technology, offering turn-key solutions in subsea infrastructure and transmission capacity.

“The activation of the 2Africa submarine cable is a monumental step in our mission to bridge the digital divide in Africa. Airtel is proud to launch the first phase of the 2Africa cable system powered by the latest SLTE equipment from our partner,” said PD Sarma, CEO of Airtel Telesonic.

The activation of the 2Africa cable is part of a broader initiative to deliver faster and more resilient internet services, supporting the digital transformation across Africa. 

This project not only highlights Airtel Africa’s commitment to advanced infrastructure but also underscores their dedication to empowering communities with the tools they need to thrive in the digital age.

Internet users in Kenya can look forward to significantly improved connectivity and speeds. 

The project introduces new technology that allows for the deployment of up to 16 fiber pairs, doubling the capacity of older technologies.
