Kisumu Deploys Drones to Deliver Blood, Drugs to Remote Areas

Date:

KISUMU, Kenya — Kisumu County has introduced drone technology to deliver blood for transfusions and essential medical supplies to hard-to-reach areas, in a move aimed at strengthening emergency healthcare access and response times.

Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the initiative reflects the county’s focus on practical, high-impact interventions that directly improve service delivery, particularly in critical care.

“The use of drones to deliver both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical supplies during emergencies… reflects our resolve to ensure that no life is lost due to delays in accessing critical care,” Nyong’o said.

The programme, implemented under the county’s Department of Medical Services led by CECM Greg Ganda, targets remote and underserved areas where infrastructure challenges often delay timely delivery of life-saving supplies.

Health officials say the drones are being used to transport blood units, emergency drugs, and other essential medical commodities, significantly reducing turnaround time compared to traditional road transport.

The initiative complements Kisumu’s existing emergency response system, which includes free ambulance services accessible to residents across the county. Authorities say the integration of drone logistics with ambulance networks enhances the county’s capacity to respond to urgent medical needs.

Nyong’o commended healthcare workers and emergency personnel involved in the programme, citing their role in advancing responsive and people-centred governance.

The adoption of drone technology aligns with a growing trend across Africa, where digital and aviation innovations are increasingly being deployed to bridge healthcare access gaps, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach regions.

Experts note that such systems can improve survival rates in emergencies such as maternal complications, trauma cases, and severe anaemia, where timely access to blood and medication is critical.

County officials say feedback from communities has been positive, with beneficiaries highlighting faster response times and improved access to care.

The programme forms part of broader efforts by the Kisumu County Government to modernise healthcare delivery through innovation while maintaining investment in large-scale infrastructure and policy reforms.
