Machachari Star Turns to Fans for Help Getting Back to Kenya

Former Machachari actor Ian Nene has appealed for financial assistance as he seeks to return to Kenya from the United Kingdom and begin a new chapter back home.

Nene, popularly known as Almasi, made the appeal through social media, asking well-wishers to contribute towards the cost of his journey.

The former child star said he was trying to raise enough money to pay for his return ticket and other expenses linked to relocating to Kenya.

“I’m reaching out to ask for a little help. Trying to raise enough money for my ticket back home to Kenya. Any contribution, no matter how small, would mean so much to me and bring me one step closer to getting home,” Nene said.

His request has drawn renewed attention to the actor’s life away from Kenyan television and his journey in the years since he left Machachari.

Nene became a household name after playing Almasi in the popular Citizen TV drama, which followed the lives of several children and families. His role made him one of the most recognisable young actors of his generation.

However, his life after television took a markedly different direction.

Nene moved to the UK to pursue higher education and recently completed his studies at the University of Kent.

He celebrated his graduation in June 2026, sharing footage of himself receiving his degree. Reports identified the achievement as an important milestone after years of living and studying abroad.

His graduation marked another significant stage in a journey that has seen him move from child acting to education, spirituality and live entertainment.

His spiritual journey has also attracted considerable attention.

Nene previously spent more than three years living around a Hindu temple and engaging with monks and spiritual teachings. He has spoken publicly about how his mother’s stage-four breast cancer diagnosis affected him and pushed him to question his faith and search for answers.

His fashion, appearance, spiritual beliefs and lifestyle have repeatedly become subjects of social media discussions.

The scrutiny became significant enough for his former Machachari co-star Brian Kimaru, popularly known as MaDVD, to address the issue publicly.

The issue of public attention has also remained relevant in Nene’s own social media posts.

In September, he shared a humorous video asking people to leave him alone. In the clip, Nene repeatedly told viewers not to bother him and ended with a simple plea.

“Leave me alone, leave me alone, don’t ask me questions, I ain’t even got my number on your phone,” he said.

He captioned the post, “It’s that simple. Just do it.”
