BROWNSVILLE, Texas – American actor RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr in the hit television drama Breaking Bad, has died aged 34.
Mitte’s death was announced on Monday, October 12, 2026, by his representatives, who described him as a beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate disability rights advocate. He died in Brownsville, Texas, with no immediate cause of death disclosed.
The actor, who lived with cerebral palsy, drew on his personal experience to portray Walter White Jr, the son of Bryan Cranston’s character in the Emmy-winning crime drama. His performance helped bring greater visibility to disability representation on television.
Bryan Cranston Pays Emotional Tribute
Cranston, who played Mitte’s on-screen father, paid tribute to the actor in an emotional Instagram post, saying he was in “deep despair” following news of his death.
He recalled meeting Mitte when he was 14 and being cast as Walter White Jr, describing how the young actor grew in confidence and ability throughout the series.
Cranston also praised Mitte’s advocacy for performers with disabilities, saying he never allowed his cerebral palsy to become an excuse for anything.
“All that promise and potential now is such a loss,” Cranston wrote, adding that he had enjoyed working with Mitte during and after the show’s run.
“I’ll miss you, son,” he said.
Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, also expressed his grief, describing himself as heartbroken and saying Mitte would be missed.
Dean Norris, who portrayed Hank Schrader, remembered Mitte as a sweetheart who had been a familiar presence on set from a young age.
Actor Used Fame To Champion Disability Rights
Beyond his acting career, Mitte became a prominent advocate for disability awareness, inclusion and more diverse representation in entertainment.
He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and established The Mitte Foundation to support philanthropic and community initiatives.
His representative, Sean Reilly, said Mitte used his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities.
Mitte had spoken publicly about the importance of showing more varied and complex portrayals of disabled people on screen.
In a 2021 interview with the BBC, he welcomed growing awareness of disability representation while noting that progress often came through individual breakthroughs rather than sweeping changes.
Rise To Fame Through Breaking Bad
Mitte rose to international prominence in Breaking Bad, which aired on AMC for five seasons between 2008 and 2013.
Created by Vince Gilligan, the series followed Walter White, a New Mexico chemistry teacher who turns to manufacturing methamphetamine after receiving a cancer diagnosis in an attempt to secure his family’s financial future.
Mitte played Walter White Jr, whose relationship with his father became increasingly strained as Walter’s criminal activities escalated.
The drama earned 58 Primetime Emmy nominations and won 16 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series honours in 2013 and 2014.
Mitte’s performance was particularly notable because he shared cerebral palsy with his character, although the show did not explicitly discuss the condition.
Career Extended Beyond Breaking Bad
Born and raised in Louisiana, Mitte moved to Los Angeles in 2005 to support his younger sister’s acting career. He subsequently pursued opportunities in television and film, landing his breakthrough role in Breaking Bad as a teenager.
His other credits included Hannah Montana, Switched at Birth, Westhampton and Talking to Strangers, one of his more recent projects.
Mitte continued to seek roles that offered more nuanced portrayals of people with disabilities while using his public profile to advocate for greater inclusion in the entertainment industry.
Authorities in Brownsville confirmed his death, but the cause and manner had not been determined at the time of reporting. A post-mortem examination was expected as investigations continued.
