Sudanese-American supermodel Anok Yai is pushing back strongly against claims linking her to an alleged bathroom-related wardrobe malfunction at the 2024 Met Gala, publicly calling out The Washington Post for what she described as reckless reporting and false implications.
The controversy erupted after the American publication released an article discussing the hidden logistical struggles celebrities face while attending the prestigious Met Gala, particularly the challenges of wearing highly restrictive couture outfits for hours.
Among the stories featured in the article was an anecdote shared by celebrity stylist Mickey Freeman, who described an unnamed client allegedly being forced to tear a hole into a couture outfit in order to use the bathroom during the event.
According to the report, the mystery celebrity had been sewn into a “sheer mesh jumpsuit,” making it nearly impossible to remove the garment normally.
The Washington Post later attempted to identify the unnamed celebrity through what it described as “online sleuthing,” eventually suggesting that Anok Yai may have been the person referenced because her dazzling Swarovski-encrusted 2024 Met Gala look appeared to match the stylist’s description.
The implication quickly spread online, with social media users speculating about Yai and the alleged incident.
However, the runway star wasted no time shutting down the claims.
On May 9, 2026, Yai took to her Instagram Stories with a furious response directed at the publication.
“I usually stay quiet and keep to myself,” she wrote.
“But how dare you misalign my character and imply that I ripped my outfit and peed on myself during the Met Gala of 2024! Fact check next time! Are you crazy?!”
Yai did not stop there.
In another pointed remark, she challenged the publication and online critics to produce actual evidence supporting the rumor.
“If you find any photos of my outfit ripped or urine dripping down my leg, send it to me,” she wrote.
Her fiery response ignited conversations across social media platforms, with many users criticizing what they viewed as irresponsible speculation and invasive reporting surrounding celebrities.
The backlash intensified enough that stylist Mickey Freeman later stepped in to clarify the situation.
Following Yai’s public response, Freeman stated that she was not the unnamed client he had referenced in the original anecdote.
Yai, who has built a reputation as one of the fashion industry’s most poised and private figures, rarely engages publicly in controversy, which made her response even more notable to fans.
Born in Egypt to South Sudanese parents and raised in the United States, Anok Yai rose to global fame after a photograph of her at Howard University’s homecoming went viral in 2017.
