LOS ANGELES – Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung to one of the biggest box-office debuts in cinema history, earning an estimated $355 million in North America during its opening weekend while amassing $928 million globally, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The latest installment in Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man franchise, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, recorded the second-largest domestic opening weekend of all time, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, which earned $357 million in 2019, according to Box Office Mojo.
The superhero blockbuster also generated an additional $573 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide debut to an impressive $928 million.
Industry analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research described the performance as extraordinary.
“This is a colossal opening,” Gross said. “The summer has been without a big action title for nine weeks—an eternity at the box office. The market is ripe-ripe-ripe for this film.”
Peter Parker Faces New Challenges
The film sees Peter Parker living in isolation after erasing his identity from the world’s memory, forcing him to confront personal transformation while facing new enemies.
Alongside Holland, the film features Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh, and Sadie Sink in key roles.
The strong overseas performance was particularly notable in China, a market that has become increasingly challenging for Hollywood studios.
Gross said international earnings are expected to account for more than 60 percent of the film’s global revenue.
‘The Odyssey’ Holds Strong
Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of The Odyssey secured second place at the North American box office with $51 million, pushing its domestic total to nearly $400 million.
The Universal Pictures production stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope and Tom Holland appearing as Telemachus.
Gross said the simultaneous success of both films reflects renewed momentum for cinemas.
“The combination of Spider-Man and The Odyssey—a legacy superhero sequel and a big original production—is taking the box office to new highs by a comfortable margin,” he said.
Animated Films Round Out Top Five
Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 5 finished third after earning $6.3 million, while Universal’s Minions & Monsters placed fourth with $5.8 million.
Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana rounded out the top five with $5.3 million.
Other films in the weekend’s top 10 included Hadestown: The Musical, The Invite, I Want Your Sex, Evil Dead Burn, and Young Washington.
With its record-breaking debut, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reaffirmed the enduring global appeal of Marvel’s iconic web-slinger and provided a significant boost to the summer box office.
