LONDON, United Kingdom — Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to tighten their grip on the Premier League title race by extending their lead at the summit and piling pressure on defending champions Manchester City.
The Gunners host AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, knowing a victory would move them 12 points clear of City, who face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge 24 hours later.
Arsenal currently sit nine points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side, albeit having played one game more, making this weekend a potentially decisive moment in the title race.
“The closer we get, the relevance and importance of the match increases,” Arteta said ahead of the clash. “Tomorrow is a big day for us. The players know it, our supporters know it.”
The Spaniard called on fans to create a charged atmosphere for the early kick-off, urging them to fully back the team in what he described as a crucial fixture.
Arsenal head into the match buoyed by a narrow but significant 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final earlier this week—a result that revived momentum after recent domestic setbacks.
Arteta’s side had suffered disappointment in cup competitions, losing to City in the League Cup final and to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Despite those setbacks, Arsenal remain firmly in contention for a historic double—chasing their first Premier League title in 22 years alongside a maiden Champions League crown.
“First of all, the capacity we have as a club and as a team, the will to win,” Arteta said when asked about his belief in securing silverware. “We recognise the opportunity ahead, and we are going to do our best to achieve it.”
The north London club has not lifted a major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2020, and the current campaign represents their strongest chance yet to end that drought.
Arteta also downplayed speculation over his long-term future, with his current contract running until 2027.
“There’s no news on that. We have no time to discuss that now. The full focus is on what we have to do from here until the end of the season,” he said.
“I am fully committed and really happy… I still have so much ambition to do with this football club.”
As the season enters its decisive phase, Arsenal’s ability to maintain consistency could prove critical. A win against Bournemouth would not only strengthen their title credentials but also shift psychological pressure onto City ahead of their challenging trip to Chelsea.
