NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s David Munyua has qualified for the 2027 Paddy Power World Darts Championship, securing a historic second consecutive appearance at Alexandra Palace.
Munyua booked his place through the North African qualification route after winning the African Darts Group Northern Africa qualifier held in Nairobi on Sunday.
The 30-year-old edged fellow Kenyan Evans Njuguna 8-7 in a dramatic final to secure his return to the global darts showpiece.
Munyua Seals Alexandra Palace Return
Competing in a fiercely contested qualifier, Munyua battled through the knockout stages before producing a decisive run to the final.
He defeated Okalany Robert Clegg 6-0 in the quarter-finals before overcoming Peter Wanjii 7-5 in the semi-final.
Munyua then faced Njuguna in the final, where he held his nerve to win the deciding leg and claim the championship.
His route to the title came despite averaging in the low 80s during much of the tournament.
The victory means Munyua, popularly known as “Why Not?”, will once again compete against the world’s leading darts players at Alexandra Palace.
First Kenyan to Reach World Championship
Munyua made history at the 2026 World Darts Championship when he became the first Kenyan player to compete at the prestigious tournament.
His debut produced one of the tournament’s biggest shocks.
Drawn against Mike De Decker, the 2024 World Grand Prix champion, Munyua fell two sets behind before mounting a remarkable comeback.
Kevin Doets Ended Munyua’s Dream Run
Munyua’s historic run eventually ended in the second round against Kevin Doets, who defeated him in straight sets.
Despite the defeat, Munyua’s performance made him one of the most popular players among the Alexandra Palace crowd and helped raise the profile of Kenyan darts internationally.
He will now have another opportunity to compete on the sport’s biggest stage when the 2027 championship takes place in December.
Munyua turns 31 in October and combines his darts career with his work as a Nairobi-based veterinarian.
Africa Guaranteed At Least Two Players
Munyua will be one of at least two African players expected to compete at the upcoming World Championship.
The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) has introduced a Southern Africa qualifying tournament to complement the Northern Africa route and guarantee greater representation from the continent.
The Southern Africa qualifier is scheduled to take place in early November.
The development gives more African players an opportunity to compete for places at Alexandra Palace and expands the continent’s presence at the World Championship.
Munyua’s Route to the Title
Munyua’s successful campaign in Nairobi began with a commanding quarter-final victory.
