Egypt booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash on Friday.

The tightly contested encounter remained deadlocked after regulation and extra time, forcing the match to penalties, where Egypt held their nerve to secure victory and progress to the last 16.

The win sees the Pharaohs continue their impressive World Cup campaign, with the victory setting up a Round of 16 fixture against the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde.

Australia bowed out of the tournament after a spirited performance but failed to convert enough spot-kicks to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Egypt become one of the latest teams to seal a place in the knockout stage as the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup continues across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
