Kenyan-eligible midfielder Tyler Onyango has completed a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday, signing a three-year contract with the English Championship club after leaving Premier League side Everton.
The 23-year-old midfielder joined Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent after his Everton contract expired. He secured the move following a trial with the club during pre-season, where he impressed the technical team enough to earn a permanent deal.
Onyango will remain at Hillsborough until June 2029, giving him an opportunity to establish himself at a new club after several loan spells during his time at Everton.
The transfer also represents an important step in his development as he seeks regular first-team football and continues his international journey with Kenya.
Sheffield Wednesday gave Onyango an opportunity to train with the squad during pre-season before making a decision on his future.
The midfielder featured in a friendly against Oldham Athletic as he sought to demonstrate his fitness, versatility and ability to compete for a place in the squad. His performances impressed the club’s technical staff, who subsequently offered him a three-year contract.
The move allows Onyango to begin a new chapter after spending much of his professional career under the Everton system.
Onyango brings significant physical presence to Sheffield Wednesday’s squad.
Standing at approximately 6ft 5in, the midfielder can operate in several positions. He has played in central midfield and can also provide an option in a back-three defensive system.
His versatility could prove valuable to Sheffield Wednesday as manager Henrik Pedersen looks to build a competitive squad.
Onyango’s size also gives him an advantage in aerial situations, while his ability to play in different positions allows the coaching staff to deploy him according to the demands of individual matches.
The Sheffield Wednesday move therefore gives him an opportunity to turn his physical attributes and technical development into consistent senior performances.
Onyango developed through the Everton academy after joining the club as a youngster. The English-born midfielder progressed through the youth system and eventually made his senior debut for the Premier League club.
He made his first-team debut in an FA Cup fixture against Sheffield Wednesday in January 2021 before later making his Premier League debut against Manchester City.
However, establishing a regular place in Everton’s first team proved difficult.
The club sent him out on several loan spells to gain senior experience. He spent time with Burton Albion, Forest Green Rovers and Stockport County, experiencing different levels of English football.
Those spells provided Onyango with valuable competitive experience while allowing him to continue developing away from the pressure of breaking into Everton’s established Premier League squad.
His Everton contract eventually expired, allowing him to leave the club as a free agent and pursue a new opportunity.
The Sheffield Wednesday agreement gives Onyango considerably more stability than another short-term loan. His three-year contract runs until June 2029, allowing both the player and club to plan for the longer term.
The move also gives him the chance to continue developing in one of England’s professional football environments while competing at Championship level.
Born in England to a Kenyan father and British mother, Onyango qualifies to represent Kenya at senior international level. He previously represented England at Under-17 level, but he has publicly committed his senior international future to Kenya.
That decision has made him one of the players being monitored by the Harambee Stars as Kenya continues to explore options among its diaspora talent.
