NAIROBI, Kenya- DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has backed former Kenya High Commissioner to India Peter Munyiri’s bid for Nyeri governor, while urging him to build grassroots support ahead of the party primaries.
Gachagua received Munyiri at his Wamunyoro residence on Tuesday, where the economist was accompanied by grassroots leaders and formally informed him of his intention to seek the seat on a Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket.
“I have assured Economist Munyiri of a free and fair nomination and asked him to activate his support base and mobilise votes in preparation for the party primaries,” Gachagua said.
He congratulated Munyiri on pursuing the governorship but cautioned that academic and professional qualifications alone would not secure an election victory.
“Despite his impressive academic credentials, getting elected as governor requires political mobilisation,” Gachagua said, urging Munyiri to persuade Nyeri residents that he was suited to lead the county.
The DCP leader also reminded the aspirant that there was “no shortcut to hard work and no replacement for effort,” adding: “The future is green.”
Munyiri had earlier announced his intention to run for Nyeri governor on the DCP ticket after meeting Gachagua at Wamunyoro in October.
At the time, Gachagua also pledged a fair nomination process and urged him to popularise himself on the ground ahead of the party primaries.
The endorsement places Munyiri among aspirants seeking the DCP ticket as parties begin organising for the 2027 General Election.
DCP has previously indicated that its primaries are expected to be held in late March 2027.
