GATUNDU SOUTH, Kenya — Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused police of siding with armed groups during violent scenes that disrupted his political activities in Gatundu South, claiming the incident has only strengthened opposition resolve ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He was attending a church service in Gatundu South when armed goons were ferried to the area by unknown people.
In a statement issued after the events, Gachagua praised residents of Gatundu South for what he described as bravery and resistance against attempts to disrupt peace during his visit.
He claimed locals repelled and disarmed groups he alleged were goons operating under police protection, sent to attack his supporters and convoy.
“I salute the people of Gatundu South for their courage and bravery. They protected women, children, mourners and the church,” Gachagua said, describing the residents as defenders of peace during a tense political moment.
I salute the people of Gatundu South for their courage and bravery. They are the true sons and daughters of Mau Mau. I was amazed by their determination to make sure goons and state-sponsored militia are not allowed to disrupt peace. They repulsed and disarmed hundreds of goons
Claims of Police Misconduct
According to Gachagua, violence erupted as his team attended multiple public engagements, including a church service and rallies, as well as a home where four people were being mourned.
He alleged that instead of protecting civilians, police officers escorted and shielded individuals intent on causing chaos.
He further claimed that after the alleged disruption attempt failed, police responded by firing tear gas inside a church, an action he said injured women, children and congregants.
“It is unfortunate that police were protecting goons instead of innocent citizens,” he stated.
Political Fallout
Gachagua framed the Gatundu South incident as part of what he described as a broader pattern of state-sponsored intimidation in the Mt Kenya region.
He warned that continued violence would only deepen political resistance against President William Ruto, whom he accused of targeting the region.
“Continued violence against the mountain people only hardens their resolve to send him home on August 10, 2027,” Gachagua said.
He also aimed the area’s Member of Parliament, accusing the legislator of betraying constituents and claiming the violence had sealed the MP’s political fate.
No Official Police Response Yet
The National Police Service has not issued an official statement responding to Gachagua’s allegations.
There were also no confirmed reports from independent authorities on injuries or arrests related to the incident.
Gachagua has been a victim of such politically instigated violence since his impeachment.
