NAIROBI, Kenya- A two-year-old child who was allegedly kidnapped in Kiuu, Githurai, has been safely rescued following a dramatic operation involving police, journalists and residents.
The incident, which has sparked concern over rising child abduction cases in Kenya, was captured on CCTV footage showing a teenage girl identified as Elizabeth, 15, leading the toddler away from home before disappearing from view.
According to the child’s family, the toddler went missing three days before being rescued, triggering frantic search efforts by relatives and local residents in Githurai.
Citizen TV reported that the suspect was later spotted in the area, prompting a crowd to gather after recognising her from the CCTV footage.
Residents reportedly attempted to attack the teenager before journalists escorted her to Kiuu Githurai Police Station for her safety.
Police later used information provided by the suspect to trace the location where the child had allegedly been hidden. Officers recovered the toddler from a makeshift house, with another suspect also arrested during the operation.
The child was reunited with the relieved parents after days of anxiety and uncertainty.
During questioning, the teenage suspect allegedly claimed she had been sent by two other individuals to take the child and had been promised a mobile phone as a reward.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the alleged abduction network amid growing fears over increasing reports of missing children in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
The rescued child was taken to hospital for medical examination and further care.
