NAIROBI, Kenya- Nyandarua Senator John Methu has emerged as one of the biggest political winners following the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP)’s resounding victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, cementing his status as one of the fastest-rising young politicians in the Mt Kenya region.

At just 34 years old, Methu is increasingly being viewed as one of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s closest political protégés and a key figure in his strategy to build a new generation of leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The senator, who has been designated to serve as DCP’s Secretary General, played a central role in coordinating the party’s successful campaign that saw DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho defeat UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyaga by a landslide margin in one of the country’s most closely watched by-elections.

DCP crushed UDA’s candidate by more than 30,000 votes, in a shocking and humiliating defeat that has sent many back to the drawing board.

Command Centre in Mugumo-ini

According to party insiders, much of DCP’s campaign planning was coordinated from Methu’s home in Mugumo-ini, Ol Kalou.

The meetings brought together senior party officials, Members of Parliament and grassroots coordinators to develop campaign strategies, coordinate voter mobilisation, craft messaging and organise vote protection mechanisms.

The strategy, party officials say, focused not only on persuading voters but also ensuring ballots cast were safeguarded until the final tally.

The approach ultimately paid off, with DCP securing an overwhelming victory despite an intensive campaign mounted by the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which deployed senior government officials, Cabinet Secretaries and Members of Parliament throughout the campaign period.

Gachagua’s Long-Distance Campaign

One of the most striking aspects of the campaign was Gachagua’s limited physical presence in Ol Kalou.

Despite leading DCP, Gachagua stayed away from the constituency during the campaign, choosing instead to address supporters through telephone calls and virtual engagements while allowing younger party leaders to spearhead operations on the ground.

Political analysts say the strategy reflected Gachagua’s growing confidence in a younger leadership team capable of independently managing high-stakes political contests.

Young Leaders at the Forefront

Methu did not campaign alone.

He worked closely with a team of youthful leaders including Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, who coordinated campaigns across different parts of the constituency.

Following the victory, Gachagua publicly commended Wanjiku Muhia for her role in leading the campaign alongside Methu.

“Thank you my great people of Kipipiri for allowing your great daughter Wanjiku Muhia to lead the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election campaigns for our DCP candidate alongside Senator John Methu. We won courtesy of their meticulous planning,” Gachagua said in a statement.

The former Deputy President also mocked UDA’s campaign strategy, saying lavish campaign donations had failed to sway voters.

“Money failed completely. The train stalled and became a safety issue. The speedboats did not entice the Ol Kalou warriors and Mau Mau descendants. Gas cylinders could not be trusted; give every Kenyan one before us—we are all equal. Take back the mattresses to hospitals,” he said.

His remarks were a reference to government-backed development projects and campaign donations that featured prominently during the by-election.

Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru of DCP won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election with 35,440 votes, defeating UDA's Samuel Muchina Nyagah in one of Kenya's most closely watched electoral contests.

The Voice of the Campaign

Beyond strategy meetings, Methu became one of the most recognisable faces of DCP’s campaign through his energetic rallies.

His fiery speeches, sharp attacks on the ruling party and ability to lead large crowds in political songs quickly became a defining feature of the campaign.

Supporters say many of the songs carried coded political messages that resonated strongly with local voters and reinforced DCP’s campaign themes around political freedom, regional unity and resistance to intimidation.

Videos of the senator leading thousands of supporters in freedom songs frequently went viral on social media, further boosting his profile beyond Nyandarua.

A Rising Force in Mt Kenya Politics

The Ol Kalou victory has strengthened perceptions that Gachagua is deliberately nurturing a new generation of Mt Kenya politicians to spearhead DCP’s political movement.

With youthful leaders such as Methu, Njeri and Thang’wa taking prominent campaign roles, analysts say the former Deputy President appears to be investing heavily in succession planning as he positions DCP for the 2027 elections.

For Methu, the commanding victory in Ol Kalou is likely to mark a defining moment in his political career, transforming him from a first-term senator into one of the most influential young political strategists in the region and a key figure to watch in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
